Important Note:
Land values in Elko & Humboldt County have experienced a drastic increase in the past 2-3 years. Land prices in Washoe & Lyon County to the west have exploded in past few years and buyers are being pushed into Humboldt County. Investors predict land values will double in Humboldt County in the next 2-3 years. This is a fact!
Humboldt County
Humboldt County is Nevada's oldest county, created by the Utah Territorial Legislature in 1856. It was also one of Nevada's original nine counties created in 1861. Named for the Humboldt River which John C. Fremont named after Baron Friedrich Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalist, traveler and statesman. Humboldt never saw the places that bear his name. Unionville was the first county seat in 1861 until the mining boom died there and it was moved to Winnemucca on the transcontinental railroad line in 1873.

Winnemucca is the county seat of Humboldt County in the U.S. state of Nevada. It was the site of a September 19, 1900 bank robbery by the Wild Bunch. A true western town! Interstate 80 passes through the city, and is the site of a split/join of I-80 and U.S. Highway 95.

This high desert city is full of classic charm. The historic downtown area is interspersed with delightful boutiques, restaurants, pubs and the hometown businesses that serve our community.

In town, there are over 1,000 hotel rooms, several diverse restaurants, casino gaming, and plenty of other opportunities for fun.
Winnemucca has never laid claim to being the oldest settlement in the state, but its location has been more or less continuously occupied since about 1830 when beaver trappers like Peter Ogden established a camp here on what they called Mary’s River.
Twenty years later, when westward bound wagon trains began using the Humboldt Trail, the trading post on the southern bank of the river at Graveley Ford came to be called Frenchmans Ford, and by 1863 when it was renamed for the last time, in honor of the principal Paiute chief of the region, a rough settlement had grown up along the river bank.
